Robert Kimmel Smith was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1930. As a young man, he hoped to become a doctor. After college, he served in the army and later married, having two children. In addition to the many children's books, adult books, plays and television scripts he has written, he has worked as a copywriter at an ad agency, and was a partner and creative director at another.
