Language Arts Collaboration

Third graders and seniors from L-C Intermediate and High are collaborating in the name of literature and technology. Leveled reading groups will complete one of three novels with their high school mentor and together discuss and work through a series of literature and technology-based tasks in order to explore the characters, conflicts, and themes of their novels. Students young and old will collaborate through a wikispace where they access videos, quizzes and activities that correspond with their book selection. Students will also post assigned tasks such as dicussion opinions and group-produced video spots to share with peers. High school reading mentors and their third grade readers will receive guidance and support from a high school English teacher, a third grade language arts teacher and a intermediate technology teacher. This first leveled set of novels--Amelia Bedelia, The Littles Go Exploring, and Chocolate Fever--serve as a pilot program for the fourth quarter. We are currently planning on setting up a quarterly collaborative L-C HS/IS Book Club for the 2010-2011 academic year. Based on the process and results from this pilot program, we can better plan and facilitate a quad program for next year.
